What is Indian head massage?

Indian head massage is rooted in a traditional Indian practice of massage that has been passed down through generations. In India, massage has long been part of everyday life and wellbeing, with head, neck and shoulder massage traditionally used within families.

The form of Indian head massage widely practised in the West today was developed by Narendra Mehta, who grew up in India experiencing traditional head massage. When he came to the UK in the 1970s, he developed and taught a structured form of Indian head massage extending the treatment beyond the head to include the upper back, shoulders, arms and neck.

My Indian head massage.

I trained in Narendra Mehta’s method of Indian head massage and it’s the foundation of the Indian head massage I offer at Disco Holistic.

From shoulders to scalp

Indian head massage is traditionally performed seated, making it an incredibly accessible treatment, and it works across much more than your head.

I begin with the upper back and shoulders, moving through the arms and neck before turning my attention the scalp, face and temples. It’s rhythmic, grounding and can be surprisingly invigorating as well as deeply relaxing.

Oil or no oil?

Your Indian head massage can be performed with or without oil, but using oil is my preferred method.

Using oil on the scalp and hair adds another sensory element to the treatment and allows the hands to move smoothly through the scalp and hair while giving the hair and scalp extra care along the way. Depending on the oil I use it can help condition the hair, soften it and leaves the scalp nourished.

There’s something wonderfully grounding and luxurious about a warm, oil based scalp massage, it slows everything down and makes the treatment feel like a real pause from the outside world.

If oil isn’t for you, that’s absolutely fine. We can keep things completely oil free and work over clothing instead. You get to choose what feels good for you.
